Between 12 - 21 September
Every September, thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate the country’s fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.
The following events are all free to attend, but pre-booking is required, as spaces are limited.
Please note, all tours may include walking on uneven surfaces, with low light levels at times. Please wear sensible footwear.

‘Lives of the Monks’ Guided Tour

Discover the fascinating lives of the Benedictine monks who lived on site at Canterbury Cathedral during the middle ages. Explore the monastic ruins and view the new exhibition in the Viewing Gallery.
Please note, the tour takes place outside or in the Cloisters, which is wheelchair accessible but parts of the grounds are a little uneven. The Viewing Gallery is on the first floor of the Visitor Centre, with lift access.

Canterbury Cathedral Hidden Chapels Tour

Discover some of Canterbury Cathedral's smaller places of worship, not usually open to the public, on this fascinating guided tour.
Please note, there are steps up to the Bastion Chapel, with no wheelchair access. Wheelchair access is possible to the Huguenot Chapel and Our Lady Martyrdom Chapel.

Cathedral Precincts and Gardens Tour
Monday 15 September, 12:00

Sunday 21 September, 13:30
Discover the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral, steeped in centuries of history, and explore gardens with stories of monks, brave soldiers and Cathedral clergy with a love of bowling.
There is level access along all of this tour, but please note and take care on uneven stone cobbles and grass.

Aphra Behn (1640-1689), professional playwright, poet, novelist and translator, was born in Canterbury. Here is a rare opportunity to see extraordinary documents and printed materials related to her life and work.
Please note, dogs are welcome in the Cathedral and Precincts, but are not permitted in the Archives and Library building where this event will be taking place.
