Henry Purcell: Sacred Music
Catalogue Number DCCCD102
Release Date 6 March 2016
Description
For their debut recording, the Girls’ Choir of Canterbury Cathedral perform a selection of anthems by the great English composer, Henry Purcell. The programme is one of contrasts: anthems of jubilation and celebration appear alongside those of a penitential nature, while well-known works are combined with gems less-frequently heard. The girls and Lay Clerks sing this music in the extraordinary acoustic of Canterbury’s gothic nave, accompanied by those instruments that would have been available to Purcell himself at the Chapel Royal in London. The Girls’ Choir was founded in 2014 and the ensemble sang its first service in January of that year.
