Sacred Resonance: Reimagining Christian Iconography at Canterbury Cathedral

Wednesday 24 June, 15:30 in the Cathedral Lodge Common Room with viewing of the icons in the Crypt from 15:00

The University of Kent and Canterbury Cathedral present regular seminars on Faith, Culture, and the Arts, to exploring key themes of theology, culture, spirituality, the arts, and social justice in an accessible and inclusive setting.

This next seminar will be in conversation with curator Jacquiline Cresswell, exploring Muraire’s series of paintings showing religious iconography through a contemporary lens, currently displayed in the Eastern Crypt of Canterbury Cathedral.

The works depict familiar icons and stories from the Bible in new modern guises. Cresswell writes: ‘Muraire’s paintings encourage individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs, to contemplate their own personal journeys.

The stripped-down imagery acts as a mirror, reflecting the viewers' doubts, vulnerabilities, hopes, and longings for connection.’

Free to attend. Refreshments provided.

These seminars are organised by the Michael Ramsey Chair in Theology, Professor of Faith, Culture and the Arts, Jonathan Arnold.
