The Safeguarding Committee supports Chapter members in meeting its safeguarding responsibilities by overseeing safeguarding activity across all areas of Cathedral life. It ensures that safeguarding arrangements are effective, regularly reviewed and clearly communicated both within the Cathedral community and externally. While the Committee does not manage individual safeguarding cases, it monitors safeguarding practice, identifies lessons learned from cases where appropriate, and promotes a culture where the safety and wellbeing of children, young people and vulnerable adults remain a priority.

The Committee provides strategic leadership for safeguarding by maintaining a three-year safeguarding plan, reviewing risks, policies and procedures, and ensuring compliance with the Church of England, diocesan and statutory safeguarding requirements. It also oversees safer recruitment processes, safeguarding training, audit action plans and the preparation of the Cathedral’s Annual Safeguarding Report. In carrying out its work, the Committee seeks to ensure that the experiences and perspectives of victims and survivors inform safeguarding practice and help shape a safe, healthy and supportive Cathedral community.

The Nominations Committee supports Chapter members in ensuring that the Cathedral benefits from an appropriate balance of skills, knowledge, experience and diversity among its trustees and committee members. It advises on the recruitment and selection of non-executive Chapter members, committee members and other appointments for which Chapter has responsibility, helping to ensure that governance arrangements remain effective and representative.

The Committee also promotes the ongoing development of Cathedral leadership by identifying training needs, reviewing the collective skills and experience of Chapter members, and recommending improvements where needed. Working closely with other Chapter committees, it provides advice on appointments to subsidiary organisations and external bodies and recommends candidates for the role of Senior Non-Executive Member, helping to strengthen governance and support the Cathedral's long-term mission and objectives.

The Audit and Risk Committee supports Chapter members by providing independent oversight of the Cathedral’s financial reporting, risk management and internal control systems. It helps ensure that the Cathedral operates effectively, transparently and in accordance with good governance principles by reviewing financial statements, monitoring audit activity, and assessing the performance and independence of internal and external auditors.

The Committee also oversees the identification and management of key risks, including financial, operational, governance and safeguarding risks. It reviews the Cathedral’s risk register, governance arrangements and key policies relating to fraud prevention, whistleblowing, anti-money laundering, cyber security, and information security. In addition, the Committee helps maintain accountability by ensuring that concerns can be raised confidentially, significant issues are addressed appropriately, and governance processes remain effective and robust.

The Finance Committee supports Chapter members in fulfilling its responsibility for the stewardship of the Cathedral’s financial resources. It oversees financial strategy, policies and procedures, ensuring that the Cathedral’s finances are managed responsibly and sustainably. The Committee reviews budgets, monitors financial performance against agreed plans, considers major projects and capital expenditure, and provides advice and recommendations to Chapter to support informed decision-making.

The Committee also oversees banking, borrowing, reserves and investment arrangements, ensuring that financial resources are managed in line with the Cathedral’s long-term objectives and ethical principles. It monitors investment performance, reviews income-generating activities and major projects, and assesses the financial implications of future developments. Through regular scrutiny of financial information and risk, the Committee helps ensure the Cathedral’s financial stability, accountability and long-term sustainability.

The Fabric Advisory Committee plays a key role in the care, conservation and development of the Cathedral and its surrounding precinct. Established under the Care of Cathedrals Measure 2011, the Committee is responsible to the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England and supports the long-term stewardship of the Cathedral as a Grade I listed building and living place of worship. It advises Chapter on matters relating to the Cathedral’s fabric, historic environment, landscape, archaeological remains and significant objects in its care.

The Committee also considers and determines applications for works to the Cathedral where these fall within its statutory authority and maintains an inventory of items of historical, architectural, archaeological and artistic significance. Through its expertise and oversight, the Committee helps ensure that changes and improvements are carefully managed, preserving the Cathedral’s heritage while supporting its ongoing mission, worship and community life.
