A FRIENDLY TALK
Mary Moders – The Counterfeit Lady Unveiled
Tuesday 10 November, 10:30-11:30 in the Clagett Auditorium
On 29 May 1663, Samuel Pepys joined the crowds of tourists to visit the Gatehouse prison in Westminster. The subject of his visit was Princess Henrietta van Wolway of Cologne, awaiting trial for bigamy and forgery.
The thing is she wasn’t really a princess. She just called herself that. Depending on who you asked, her real name was Mary Carleton. Or Mary Stodders. Or sometimes Mary Moders. At times she was also known as Maria Darnton, Mary Blacke, Mary Kirton, Maria Lyon, and Mary Carlston.
Dr Sara Read, Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University will reveal to attendees the story of the many lives and escapades of Mary Moders (aka the Crafty Whore of Canterbury and the Famous Cheat), born near our Cathedral in 1642 and who died by execution in 1673 when she declared to the crowds that she hoped God would forgive her as she forgave her enemies.
Sara Read will reveal the original picture of Mary. Or will she…?
