A FRIENDLY TALK
A Cultural Melting Pot – Art and Architecture in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily
Friday 26 February 2027, 10:30-11:30 in the Clagett Auditorium
2027 marks the 1000th anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth.
As our Cathedral takes part in the national celebrations of the Year of the Normans, join John Williams as he returns to speak to Friends about the Norman period in Sicily (1061–1194).
This was a golden age of multiculturalism and architectural innovation. Led by the Hauteville family (including Roger I of Sicily and Roger II of Sicily), the Normans united the island and blended Latin, Byzantine Greek, and Islamic cultures into a centralized, prosperous kingdom. A Trustee of The Friends for eight years until 2025, Dr Williams was for a long time County Archaeologist and Head of Heritage Conservation at Kent County Council.
This event is organised by and in support of The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral (Registered Charity No 1210093).
