Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on 10 May about the easing of some lockdown restrictions and his encouragement for construction workers to return to sites, Chapter approved a minimum number of Masons to return to the Precincts and Broadoak this week. Contractors will be permitted back on site on 26 May, two months since all activity was suspended due to the lockdown.

We are adhering to Government, Church of England and Construction Leadership Council guidance and advice to ensure we maximise the safety of all involved and observe social distancing and hygiene protocols, including the enhanced use of PPE where appropriate and required.

Works over the coming weeks will be archaeology and completion of work and snagging to the Visitor Centre, landscaping in the Western Precincts, continued masoning and works to the Cathedral Aisle roof and Western Towers, and continued timber work and leading of the Nave Aisle Roofs.

By safely restarting this essential work now, as soon as we are permitted to reopen to the public we can welcome them to enjoy the Cathedral in all its splendour.
