Chorister to sing in final of BBC competition

Excitement is building for 11-year-old Canterbury Cathedral chorister Frederick Butler who has sung his way into the final of the BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year competition.

Frederick from Faversham is one of four boy finalists and will be travelling to MediaCityUK in Salford on Saturday 20 October 2018 to sing before a panel of expert judges.

Canterbury Cathedral’s Master of the Choristers David Flood said: “We are very proud of Frederick who is continuing what is becoming quite a tradition of having a Canterbury finalist in this competition. This will be the fifth year in succession that one of our choristers has enjoyed the experience and success of this selection.”

The winners of the BBC competition, a boy and a girl, will each receive a trophy and may be offered opportunities to appear on radio and television programmes during the year, and work with top musicians, including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The choir is currently looking for new choristers – auditions for boys, aged 7 or 8, are on Saturday 10 November and parents should contact davidf@canterbury-cathedral.org. Auditions for girls, currently in year 8, are on Saturday 24 November, contact david.newsholme@canterbury-cathedral.org
