More than 1,000 people enjoyed the Cathedral’s open event on Wednesday – Explore Your Cathedral.
In previous years the event has been held in the evening only but this year visitors were able to enjoy displays and exhibitions from 1pm through until 9pm and many families took advantage of the earlier opening. Staff from across the Cathedral were on hand to talk about their work and visitors were able to try out for themselves skills such as stonemasonry and climb the stairs to the organ loft to find out how the beautiful music is generated in the Cathedral.
The focus of the event was The Canterbury Journey – the current restoration and development project at the Cathedral. The lucky winners of a competition run in conjunction with the Kent Messenger were treated to a special tour up to the safety deck built earlier this year 16 meters above the Nave floor. The deck helps the team working on the project to gain access to the high level windows and the stonework of the vaulting but also affords beautiful views of the Quire and east end of the Cathedral.
Some of the quotes from our visitors tell part of yesterday’s story and the images below tell the rest.
“I joined The Friends tonight!”
“Very qualified team and fine ambassadors for the Cathedral.”
“That experience exceeded all expectations.”
