Canterbury Cathedral Dean, the Very Revd Dr Robert Willis presented a stone Canterbury cross to Grace Cathedral in Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday (10 April 2016).
The carving, by Cathedral stone mason Jake Wood (pictured left), was given and dedicated during a special Eucharist when the gothic church became the new cathedral church of the Episcopal diocese of South Carolina. The cross will be set in the buidling as a sign of it being a cathedral in the Anglican Communion.
At the service, the Presiding Bishop, the Most Revd Michael Curry, preached a rousing sermon of Easter celebration and inclusivity to all followers of the Way of Christ to a congregation which overflowed into a marquee outside. The Provisional Bishop of South Carolina, The Rt Revd Charles von Rosenberg, presided.
Dean Willis congratulated Dean Michael Wright and the clergy and congregation of the new cathedral and assured them of the prayers and ongoing support of the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion.”
