In January it was announced that Berman Guedes Stretton a firm of architects, had been appointed to
design the new Welcome Centre. BGS won the project following an invited competitive interview.
Designing the new centre will be a significant part of the “Canterbury Journey” project. BGS will work closely with Chapter to design an open and welcoming visitor centre offering information and providing a hospitable “Benedictine Welcome” for the hundreds of thousands of modern pilgrims who visit the Cathedral annually.
The interview panel said they were impressed by BGS’ distinctive approach and response to
the brief. The architects demonstrated a logical process intended to question and challenge the
panel’s expectations and to develop further the appropriate brief from this complex project in the
Cathedral’s precincts within this part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
