There were choral celebrations at Evensong on Sunday 7 September 2014 when new members of the Cathedral Foundation and Choir were installed.
The Dean of Canterbury, the Very Revd Dr Robert Willis, installed Mrs Janice Reid as a Lay Member of Chapter. Janice is a member of the Cathedral community, and a former member of staff of the King’s School.
The Chapter is the equivalent of a Board of Directors and is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day management of the Cathedral. The Chapter comprises the Dean, the four Residentiary Canons, the Receiver General, and four additional persons appointed by the Archbishop.
To become part of the heart of the community at Canterbury Cathedral, a community which is inclusive and welcoming of all, loving and outward looking, is indeed a very great privilege. I look forward to supporting in as many ways as possible, the Cathedral’s mission ‘To show people Jesus.’

The Dean then went on to admit four new Choristers to the Cathedral’s Choir: Henry Bersey, James Press, Freddie Rupp, and Francis Shepley. He also appointed five Side Leaders – Francis Bamford, Owain Cullen, Fergus England, William Inscoe, and Issac Lordon. James Futcher was confirmed as the new Senior Chorister and this year’s Organ Scholar, William Wallace, was installed: quite an afternoon for the Choir!
Speaking about the exciting day David Flood, Master of the Choristers and Director of Music at Canterbury Cathedral said
The Cathedral choir’s new year begins with the installation of four new Choristers to the Cathedral Foundation: The ancient statutes say that a boy is installed as a Chorister once he has sung three years with the choir, before that time he is a Singing Boy. So Henry, James, Freddie and Frankie are already very experienced singers. This day is always a very exciting day. Francis, Owain, Fregus, William and Isaac are in their last year and so they have been made Side leaders and our Spence Scholar, the Senior Chorister is James Futcher. We are also delighted to welcome William Wallace as our new Organ Scholar. William comes to us having already been Organ Scholar at Portsmouth Cathedral.
