The Archbishop joins 700 young people on the Easter Pilgrimage

Archbishop Justin Welby and Bishop Trevor Willmott joined over 700 young people who participated in the Easter Monday Youth Pilgrimage (21 April).

The pilgrimage saw young Christians (predominantly under 18 years old) make their way across Kent to the Cathedral for a special service to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Walking on the pilgrimage for the first time, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, joined young pilgrims who gathered at Harbledown for the walk to Canterbury.

The Bishop of Dover, Trevor Willmott, joined pilgrims from villages south of Canterbury, and from Dover, along with guests from Arras in France, the Netherlands and USA as they walked in from Patrixbourne.

Other young pilgrims were joined by Canon Clare Edwards at Chartham and Canon Chris Irvine at Sturry.

Pilgrims converged at the Cathedral at 12 noon. After a quick lunch, pilgrims participated in prayer stations in the Nave followed by a lively youth-led service.

The pilgrimage is organised by a committee of young people from parishes in the Canterbury Diocese.

With the theme ‘More than words’, this year’s Easter Monday Youth Pilgrimage featured prayer, activities and worship that will encourage pilgrims to experience their faith by living out the words of the Bible.

Now in its 41st year, the Easter Monday Youth Pilgrimage once again gathered young people of all ages from around the world for a day of journey and worship that culminated with a vibrant service at Canterbury Cathedral. EMYP 2014 gave young pilgrims an opportunity to explore what it might mean for them to live out the words they encounter in the Bible. It was an excellent day and many young people told me how much they enjoyed being challenged to be More than Words.
