The day St Nicholas came to town

The day St Nicholas came to town

Hundreds of people enjoyed the annual St Nicholas Community Parade which took place in Canterbury on Saturday 7 December 2013.

The lively and colourful community procession of children and musicians set off from the city’s iconic Westgate Towers at midday, led by the Revd Canon Jim Rosenthal dressed as St Nicholas; the Archbishop of Canterbury (the Most Revd Justin Welby); and the Bishop of Dover (the Rt Revd Trevor Willmott). Prompting smiles, cheers and seasonal goodwill, the procession pounded through the historic cobbled streets of the city en route to the Cathedral.

At the Cathedral’s gates, Saint Nicholas was greeted by the Dean of Canterbury (the Very Revd Dr Robert Willis), the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of Dover, and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Canterbury (Cllr Heather Taylor and Mrs Linda Taylor) followed by a short service in the Cathedral. Afterwards, free hot chocolate was supplied in abundance and St Nicholas gave gifts to children in the Cathedral shop.

Now in its eighth year, the Saint Nicholas Parade is a collaboration between the Saint Nicholas Festival, the Cathedral, Big Bash Music, and Canterbury City Council. Proceeds raised from the Parade go to the St Nicholas Festival, which this year are supporting two local charities: Kentish Retts Angels and Westbere Sailing Opportunities.

The annual St Nicholas Parade was a great success. Several local schools and colleges, from Pilgrims Way County Primary to Christ Church University, formed the core of the Parade itself under the tutelage of Peter Cook of Big Bash music. Along the route, almost £430 was collected. In the evening, the annual Gala Dinner and auction was very much enjoyed and raised a further £2,000. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this special day
