It’s set in stone

It’s set in stone

A historic moment at Canterbury Cathedral.

On Monday 20th May 2013, Cathedral Stonemason Benn Swinfield began the privileged task of adding Archbishop Justin Portal Welby’s name to the wall plaque in St Augustine’s Chapel. The stone list dates back to 1896 and lists all 105 Archbishops of Canterbury.

The historic moment marks the first time the Archbishop’s name has been carved in stone at the Cathedral.

It is deeply humbling, and a huge privilege to have my name carved in stone alongside such an extraordinary and distinguished list in the chapel dedicated to the first Archbishop of Canterbury

Archbishop Justin Welby

Once Benn has carved the Archbishop’s name onto the Victorian wall monument, he will apply a black wax into the grooves, which will beautifully define the Arts & Crafts style letters against the pale alabaster stone.

The new inclusion to the list will be available to view from the end of May.
