In the late 16th century, French-speaking Protestants fled to England from northern Europe, where they were experiencing persecution because of their religious beliefs.
The close to 2,000 congregation worshipped in the Cathedral Crypt by gift of the Crown, but due to declining numbers, were later condensed to what is the Huguenot Chapel today.
Services in French are still held on Sundays in this chapel, and many descendants of the Huguenots are still in Canterbury.
