Berlioz – Symphonie fantastique
Beethoven – Mass in C

Susan Wanless conductor
Sally Silver soprano
Kiri Parker mezzo
Andrew Macnair tenor
Piran Legg bass

Come and experience one of the most astonishing orchestral pieces in the repertoire. With his Symphonie fantastique, first performed in 1830, Berlioz blew apart the conventions of the time. Its programmatic structure and revolutionary orchestration portrays an episode in the life of an artist – reveries, a ball, a scene in the countryside, a march to the scaffold and a final terrifying witches Sabbath. The two great influences in Berlioz’s creativity were Shakespeare and Beethoven, so it is fitting that other work in the concert features the latter’s Mass in C, an early work full of lyricism and drama, anticipating many of the hallmarks of his later Missa Solemnis and Choral Symphony.

Tickets priced at £22, £18, £14, £10, £8.
