Tuesday 3 October 2023, 14.30, Clagett Auditorium
TALK: Aphra Behn – Playwright, Poet, Spy
Born in Harbledown in 1640, it’s probably fair to say that not much would have been expected from Eaffry Johnson. Who could have predicted she would travel, survive the Great Plague, become a spy, start writing, and, after dying at the height of her success, be buried at Westminster Abbey – and then become almost entirely forgotten until the early 20th Century?
Charlotte Cornwell, Medieval and Early Modern Studies researcher at the University of Kent and Vice Chair of the Canterbury Commemoration Society, will talk to Friends about the first professional writer in the English language.
Tickets: £8 Friends of Canterbury Cathedral, £10 non-members, includes tea and coffee on arrival
