TALK: Tudor Canterbury – From Catholic to Prostestant
What was it like to live through the momentous religious changes of the 16th Century in Canterbury? In this talk, Doreen Rosman, former lecturer at the University of Kent, will explore local conflicts to which changing government policy gave rise.
The people of Canterbury watched as the city’s religious houses and shrines were destroyed before their eyes. They had to pay for the removal of images and fittings from their parish churches - and then for their restoration. They saw 41 people burnt to death for refusing to give up Protestant belief, but then twenty years later witnessed the arrival of refugees professing that same faith.
