One of a collection of 28 commemorative medals, most of which were manufactured by Claude Warin at Lyons in the later half of the 17th century. Born about 1611 Warin was noted for the production of large, cast portrait medallions including the one shown here of Louis XIV, King of France between 1643 and 1715. Medal production ran in the family. His brother, Jean Warin, was controller-general of the French Mint at Paris from 1647 and one of the foremost medallists of the Renaissance.
