Charity Cycle Ride along the Via Francigena route August 2007

Francigena31 cyclists leave Canterbury on 10th August 2007 to cycle to Rome. They will be following the Via Francigena (the Frankish Way), which is an ancient pilgrimage route recorded by Sigeric in 990AD when he travelled to and from Rome on his appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury. The ride is a journey of 1200 miles and includes a passage over the Grand St Bernard Pass, where it is not uncommon to have snow even in the middle of August.
The Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrimage route which is growing in popularity.

You can find out more about it at http://www.associazioneviafrancigena.com/  or http://www.viafrancigena.com/.

The team are now engaged in some serious training – most of the riders have never undertaken anything like this before in their lives. Amongst the riders are five local school students.

The group will arrive in Rome on Sunday 26th August. Each rider is paying their own expenses. The cyclists are also expected to raise at least £1000 sponsorship, of which at least 50% will go to the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign and 50% to the charity of the individual’s own choice. Our aim is to raise £50000 for the Cathedral and other charities.
We have already received some business sponsorship for which we are very grateful. Sea France have offered to sponsor our ferry fares, and Barretts are providing support vehicles. We would of course welcome further corporate sponsorship. Please get in touch with pbarrett@barrettskent.co.uk

If you would like to sponsor the team’s effort and contribute to the £50000 target, you can make a secure online donation on the team’s individual fundraising pages.

Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal takes to the road

The Save Canterbury Cathedral appeal took to the road this week thanks to Barretts of Canterbury. The local car dealer has loaned the fundraising team two cars which will be a tremendous help in raising the profile of the campaign across the county.

The cars, which weredelivered this week, will be used by the team to hold local fundraising activities and spread the word about the importance of the appeal at local events and exhibitions.

Paul Barrett, Managing Director said “Barretts of Canterbury is committed to spreading the word about this important appeal. As well as being a national and international icon, the Cathedral plays a crucial role in our local economy. Local businesses should all be supporting the restoration of this magnificent building or Kent could face a sad future without Canterbury Cathedral.”

Restaurant celebrates the start of summer

The Beehive Restaurant in Birchington celebrated the start of summer by holding two afternoon teas on Sunday 25th March.  Many people enjoyed delicious teas during the afternoon and all proceeds of the day, were donated to the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign.

£1,264 was raised for the Save Canterbury Cathedral Fundriasing Campaign.

Collections raise more than £1000

Collections held at two Sainsbury’s in Kent have raised more than £1000 towards the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign.

The collections, which were held at the stores in Chestfield and Broadstairs raised a total of £1,079.87 in just four days. Volunteers from the Herne Bay and Whitstable Lions were on hand to help at the Chestfield store whist members from the Rotary Club of Broadstairs co-ordinated the collection at their local store.

Kent Community Fundraising Manager, Karen Gambrell said

“These two collections were the first two that have been held for the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign since it was launched in October last year and I think the fantastic amount raised shows how much the people of Kent value the Cathedral and want to ensure it is here for many future generations to enjoy. We have a total of 41 shopping centre and store collections taking place over this year and I hope they will all be as successful as these first two”

If you would like to volunteer to help at a collection in your area please contact Karen Gambrell on 01227 865344 or by email
