+ Regular Giving

Many of our supporters find donating by direct debit the easiest way to support us. Your donation is automatically taken by your bank or the day you have requested and you can choose to give a fixed amount regularly that suits your monthly budget.

Regular gifts really do help us enormously, as they provide a reliable source of income, which means we are able to plan ahead, helping to save Canterbury Cathedral.

You can set up a direct debit in two ways:

  • Using your credit or debit card online through our secure server.
  • By printing off our direct debit mandate and return it to us in the post

Although Direct Debits are more cost effective for the charity to set up you may wish to make a regular donation by standing order. Please print off our standing order mandate and return it to us by post.

+ Donating Shares

The Orr Mackintosh Foundation operates a website called Share Gift which allows you to donate large or small quantities of shares to a charity.

Please visit www.sharegift.co.uk and download an information leaflet (Adobe Acrobat required) to find out more. If you do decide to donate to the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign using this method please let us know as Share Gift are not able to pass your details onto us.

+ Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving or Give As You Earn is an easy, cost effective way to make regular tax free donations to the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign.

Donating through Payroll Giving is done through your salary. Each time you get paid an amount, agreed by you, is deducted by your Payroll Department before your tax contributions are calculated.

For Example:

If you are a basic rate tax payer and you choose to donate £5 per month to the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign you will only pay £3.90. The taxman will then add £1.10 so the total amount received by the Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign is £5.

How do I donate through Payroll Giving?

- Your employer may already have a Payroll Giving scheme in place. Ask your Payroll Department and if they have they can set up your donation for you. You will need to quote our Payroll Giving reference number which is 000485047

- If your employer does not having a Payroll Giving scheme set up simply print of our Payroll Giving Application Form, complete and sign it then return it to the address on the form. We’ll do the rest.

+ Donating through the Self Assessment (SA) tax return

Individual taxpayers who complete a Self Assessment (SA) return are able to nominate the ‘Save Canterbury Cathedral Campaign’ to receive all or part of any repayment and ask for Gift Aid to apply to their donation. This facility is only available to individual taxpayers who complete an SA return; it is not available to partnerships, trusts or estates.

How to make a donation:
To nominate a charity to receive an SA repayment the questions at section 19A of the full Self Assessment return should be completed. Or questions at section 12 on the Short SA return. Save Canterbury Cathedral has been allocated an individual code by HMRC Charities. You must enter our valid code LAS65MG on your SA tax return, to identify us. Your request to donate all or part of a repayment to us cannot be processed without this code. For more information log on to www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities/charities-search.htm

+ Legacies

One of the most effective ways of supporting Canterbury Cathedral is to make a lasting legacy in your will.

Without the money left To the Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal in wills, we simply couldn't exist in the way we do. The wills being written now will be a lifeline to Canterbury Cathedral in future years.

It's quick and easy to update your existing will.

It's easy to add Canterbury Cathedral to an existing will - just speak to your solicitor. If your will doesn't need updating but you would like to include Canterbury Cathedral then your solicitor can simply add a new section mentioning us.

Deciding what to give

There are different ways to help us. You could leave a sum of money, an item of value (such as jewellery, property or shares) or the 'residue' - what's left over after you've provided for your close relatives and friends. Including us in this way is particularly valuable as it keeps pace with inflations.

It's often a good idea to specify a percentage or proportion, however small, rather than an actual amount. It's very difficult to predict what your estate is worth or how much you will need for yourself or your dependants in the meantime. Please be assured, whatever you can afford will be gratefully received and will make a real difference to the future of Canterbury Cathedral.

Letting us know

Wills are private, and you may not want anyone to know what's in yours. However, if you're happy to tell us that we have been included, we'll be delighted to hear you're supporting us. We can then keep you up to date in a way that suits you.

Telling us your plans doesn't place you under any obligation - you can change your will again whenever you want - and anything you say will be treated in strictest confidence.

Inheritance Tax can be avoided, too

We do not want the government to get money that could have come to us. Inheritance Tax can grab up to 40% of what you intend to leave, especially if you own your own home. All donations to charities in wills are tax-free. So if your estate (the total value of everything you leave) is liable to Inheritance Tax, you may find that you can reduce or avoid it altogether by leaving a certain amount to us - and your family will be no worse off. Your solicitor can advise you on how to do this.
