Save canterbury cathedral

Sponsor a stone / Sponsor a tile

Book of Donors  A walk around the Cathedral will reveal that much of its stone masonry is crumbling and covered in a harmful black sulphate crust.  To give a feel for the scale of the work required, in the two areas of the Cathedral where work is now taking place there are 30,000 stones alone, many requiring replacement.

The new stones, sourced from South West England and France, are worked largely by hand using traditional methods handed down from one generation to the next.

Be part of it
You now have a unique opportunity to play your important part in Canterbury Cathedral’s future. By sponsoring a stone to be placed into the Cathedral walls, you can make a tangible contribution that will be cherished for years to come.

We will give you a drawing that shows the area of the Cathedral where your stone is located and you will receive a personal Certificate of Thanks and recognition in our Roll of Donors.

How to sponsor a stone

There are two different types of stone that you can sponsor:

Purbeck

or a more ornate carved stone which used in decoration.

Cean

the pale walling stone from Caen in France which is widely used throughout the Cathedral

Each walling stone is £60 and the decoration stones are £300 each.

Payment is easy; you can make a one-off donation or pay in instalments over a minimum of 12 months. Just fill in the attached form and return it to us with your donation and we’ll do the rest.

Making a difference together

You can sponsor a tile as an individual or why not club together with others from your family, your school, your business or other local organisations for a joint contribution? It is also a special way to remember a loved one.

Thank you
