Lambeth Conference

Lambeth Conference

The Lambeth Conference will once again be held in Canterbury in July 2008. The conference is convened every ten years at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury and is the only occasion when bishops can meet for worship, study and conversation. Archbishops, bishops, assistant and suffragan bishops within the Communion are invited.
Also invited to attend are bishops from other churches 'in communion' with the Anglican Communion, bishops from United Churches, along with a number of ecumenical guests.
As well as the 800+ bishops who attend, their spouses are invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury's wife to a parallel, independent gathering: the Spouses Conference.

Please note the conference will affect general visiting times and it is expected that the Cathedral and/or precincts will be closed for visiting on 17, 18, 19 and 20 July 2008. There may also be other closures on other dates. For up-to-date information, please contact the Visits Office, tel. 01227 762862, visits@canterbury-cathedral.org

Cathedral Open Gardens

Cathedral Open Gardens 7th and 8th June 2008
(Part of The National Gardens Scheme in Kent)

A unique opportunity to visit five private gardens, set in the magnificent background of Canterbury Cathedral; from the Archdeaconry’s medieval walled garden with mixed planting of roses, shrubs, grasses and very old mulberry tree to the Deanery’s garden with small orchard and ‘wild’ area, lawns, herbaceous border and vegetable garden to the smaller, but equally enchanting gardens of no 15, 19 and 22 The Precincts.

Also open for visitors will be the monastic herb garden amongst the monastic dormitory ruins. Monastic herb gardens were used as a pharmacy from which the ‘doctor’ of the day gathered his remedies, but the herbs and flowers were also used for brewing, strewing, dyeing, ink-making and freshening the air. The monks saw their gardens as ‘places of refreshment conducive to health through repose and exercise’. It is hoped that the newly created herb garden will offer our visitors enjoyment, inspiration and refreshment too!

Plants will be on sale and refreshments will be served.

Garden opening times: Sat 11.00-17.30 hrs, Sun 14.00-17.30 hrs.

For more information, call the Visits Office, tel. 01227 762862 or email us at visits@canterbury-cathedral.org.
