The Old Choristers' Association

The Object of the Association

To make contributions, wherever possible, to the perpetuation of the choral tradition in Canterbury Cathedral as an aid to worship, to keep members of the association alive to the memories of their connection with the Choir of Canterbury Cathedral, in social touch with one another and with members of kindred associations, and to provide for the advancement of the education of any person who is or has been a Chorister in or admitted as a Singing Boy in the Choir of Canterbury Cathedral.

THE CHORISTERS OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

The four or five years spent as a Chorister in the Choir of one of our great Cathedrals are probably the most formative in a child’s life.

In Canterbury the boys are educated at St.Edmund’s School, situated at the top of St.Thomas’ Hill, with a stunning view over the City, supported by a very substantial scholarship from the Dean and Chapter.

They live in the ancient and beautiful Choir House next to the Cathedral. After school each day they return to the Precincts for tea, choir practice, and Evensong at 5.30 p.m.

On Sundays and Saints’ days extra Services are sung and there are regularly national and civic events requiring the Choir, especially when the Archbishop has distinguished guests.

Recitals and overseas tours now form part of the repertoire of most cathedral choirs, giving the children the experience and thrill of foreign travel. Canterbury Cathedral Choristers have made several such tours in recent years, to wide acclaim.

A Cathedral Chorister is a professional in his own right. By the age of twelve or thirteen, as well as being a competent musician, he has become a reliable and responsible person.

Voice trials are held in early November each year
Ages for eligibility : 7-8 years on the date of audition
