Cathedral staff raise over 1,500 for children’s charity

Staff at Canterbury Cathedral have raised over £1,500 for Holding On, Letting Go, a local children’s charity at a recent quiz night – a first for the Cathedral.

Over 130 members of staff, volunteers, and friends filled the auditorium of the International Study Centre to answer questions that ranged from identifying record & CD covers, to knowing the mottos of Premier League football teams, and identifying the world’s most popular fruit (it is the tomato, apparently). There were also bonus marks for the model paper aeroplane that flew the furthest distance, the finest rendition of the title track to a pop album, and the best sketch of the Cathedral.

Holding on, letting go is a charity which supports bereaved children, young people, and their families and carers in Kent and Medway who have experienced the death of an important person in their lives.

We picked this charity because they are a very small local organisation and we were keen to work with a charity where any funds we raised would really make a difference. Everyone agreed that the work they do is so important for bereaved children

Alison Brookman, HR Manager at the Cathedral and chief quizmaster for the evening.

Holding on letting go are absolutely delighted to receive such a fabulous sum of money raised by the recent Cathedral staff quiz night and would like to say a huge thank you to all involved. A donation such as this will make an enormous difference to the charity and will enable us to help directly more bereaved children in Kent. The children referred to us have lost someone close to them such as a parent or sibling and are struggling to cope with their loss. We invite them to attend a grief support weekend where they talk about what has happened and, through a series of activities, we encourage them to talk about their feelings, helping them develop resilience; to hold on to good memories and let go of horrible ones. This support can make a great difference to these children and helps them find a way forward through their grief. Thank you for choosing to support Holding on letting go
